Our story with handmade rugs began at the loom. From weaving rugs by hand, to producing them with our own team and exporting to Germany and Europe, that hands-on knowledge now continues through Le Canvas in Australia.
The Le Canvas family story begins in Herat, Afghanistan. After losing his father at a young age, a seven-year-old boy began weaving rugs to help provide for his family. What began with his own hands gradually grew as he came to work alongside other weavers.
He continued weaving through school and university, eventually graduating as a civil engineer. Rugs remained part of his life alongside his studies and later his professional career.
Over the years, the family’s rug connections extended through Germany, the United States and elsewhere. His work took him to Europe, where handmade rugs were exported, and later to Iran, where years spent among Persian rug traditions deepened an already practical understanding of the craft.
That knowledge continued after the family came to Australia. Built from the loom up, it shapes the way Le Canvas looks at rugs today — through the quality of their construction, the balance of pattern and design, and the use of colour.
Machine-made rugs became part of the business in Australia, bringing that same experience to a broader collection. Handmade rugs, however, remain closest to the family’s beginnings.
