Rug care

Caring for your rug

A well-cared-for rug can last for many years. These are general care guidelines that apply to most rugs sold by Le Canvas. Always follow any specific care instructions supplied with your rug in preference to the general guidance below.

Everyday care

  • Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting where possible. Avoid a rotating beater bar on longer piles — it can pull fibres. Vacuum in the direction of the pile.
  • Rotate the rug every few months so wear and light exposure are even across the surface.
  • Use a rug pad underneath. A rug pad protects the rug from friction, reduces slipping, and helps preserve the pile.
  • Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight where you can. All rug fibres will fade over time under strong UV.

Dealing with spills

  • Attend to spills as soon as possible. The longer a spill sits, the harder it is to remove.
  • Blot — do not rub — with a clean, dry, absorbent cloth working from the outside of the spill inward.
  • Test any cleaning product on a small, out-of-sight area first before using it on a visible part of the rug.
  • Avoid soaking the rug or saturating the backing. Excessive moisture can damage the structure.

Professional cleaning

For deeper cleaning, we recommend a professional rug cleaner. Handmade and delicate rugs should always be professionally cleaned rather than machine-washed or steam-cleaned at home.

New rug tips

  • Shedding is normal on new rugs, especially with wool and viscose blends. It reduces significantly with regular gentle vacuuming.
  • Fold marks from shipping usually settle within a few days when the rug is laid flat. Reversing the roll gently or applying gentle warmth from underneath can help.
  • Odour from packaging usually dissipates in a well-ventilated room within a few days.
